JUST DO SOMETHING: A LIBERATING APPROACH TO FINDING GOD’S WILL

Every month, we recommend a new book for you to add to your library. You don’thave to buy it; you don’t have to do anything. But in a world where your mind is threatened by information overload, we want to recommend books and resources that are vetted, tried and true. In other words, with so much I could read, we want to help you find some books you should read.

HOW DO I MAKE A DECISION WHEN THERE’S NO “RIGHT CHOICE”?

This month’s book of the month is “Just Do Something” by Kevin Deyoung. Keying off of the sermon from Paul’s Second Missionary Journey (Acts 15:36-18:22) from which we heard encouragement to pursue the Spirit-led life, this book helps us to answer the question, “how do we make decisions and seek the Spirit’s guidance when there’s no clear ‘right choice’ before us”. This short book helps you to understand wise biblical decision making. It’s definitely worth a read.

January Book of the Month

DELIGHTING IN THE TRINITY BY MICHAEL REEVES

¿QUE ES LA TRINIDAD ? POR R.C. SPROUL

January’s book of the month is Delighting in the Trinity: An Introduction to the Christian Faith by Michael Reeves. This book has not yet been translated into Spanish, so for our Spanish speakers we are recommending ¿Que Es La Trinidad? by R.C. Sproul which is available for free download.

A BOOK THAT TEACHES ABOUT THE ESSENCE OF WHO GOD IS

In our recent “Cast of Christmas” preaching series, we explored the role of the Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - in the incarnation of the Messiah. Yet, the doctrine of the Trinity remains for most as a difficult-to-understand doctrine that doesn’t easily connect with a sense of wonder and worship. However, the Trinity of God is the essence of who He is. Michael Reeves helps us to not only better understand the Trinity, but in our understanding, to increase our ability to delight in, wonder at and adore our God.

August’s book of the month is Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This short 120 page book has stood the test of time. ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS YOU’LL EVER READ ABOUT BIBLICAL COMMUNITY

Pick this book up - we’ll be going through it in small groups this fall as we seek to engage in and enjoy Biblical community with one another to the glory of God.

July Book of the Month

The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan

El Progreso del Peregrino por John Bunyan

July’s book of the month is The Pilgrim’s Progress  by John Bunyan. This summer as we walk together through a series concerning “Waiting on God in the Wilderness”, we’d encourage you to read this book.

A Book About The Christian’s Journey Through Life In A Fallen World

This book is a story. It’s an allegorical story, which means that the characters, places and events represent a bigger reality. What reality? The reality of the Christian’s journey through life in a fallen world. This book was written many centuries ago and has stood the test of time because of its resonance and application of the Gospel for Christians in any Era. So, fellow wilderness wanderer, pick up a copy in English or Spanish and make sure this gets on your 2020 summer reading list.

June Book of the Month

Uncommon Ground by Tim Keller and John Inazu

June’s book of the month is “Uncommon Ground: Living Faithfully in a World of Difference” by Tim Keller and John Inazu.

How Do I Live Faithfully When I’m Surrounded by Difference?

For a flavor of this excellent book, consider this quote from its pages:

Tolerance is a practical enduring of beliefs and practices that we do not share. It doesn’t mean accepting those beliefs or approving those practices. I fact, the demand for acceptance is a philosophical impossibility. Every one of us holds views about important matters that others find clearly misguided. There is no way that anyone can embrace all the differing and mutually incompatible beliefs. But we can do the hard work of distinguishing people from ideas, of pursuing relationships with people created in God’s image, while recognizing that we will not approve of all their beliefs or actions. Christians can demonstrate tolerance for others because our love of neighbor flows from our love of God and our love of God is grounded in the Truth of the Gospel …

You’ll find references in these pages to many issues that divide us, but no issue emerges more prominently than that of race … We have found in speaking and writing to various Christian audiences that few issues have generated more controversy or required more understanding than those related to race. Moreover, we believe that few issues of social division today are more significant for the church and for society. Christians are unlikely to find a way forward in our pluralistic society without more honestly confronting the issues of race that divide us and the society around us.

Be Choosy About What You Read During This Pandemic

Coronavirus and Christ by John Piper

Coronavirus y Cristo  por John Piper

By recommending a new book every month, we’re recommending resources to you that help you to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Pet. 3:18). It is not required that you purchase or read these books. They’re mere recommendations to assist you in choosing good books that help you to make the best use of the precious time you have.

“Our Words Are Grass. God’s Word is Granite.”

May’s book of the month is “Coronavirus and Christ” by John Piper. If you’ve ever read a book by John Piper, you’ll find that this book says very little that’s new - you’ll find the essential message that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him”. He tells you the Gospel that you need to hear. He directs you to God’s Word and reminds you of your purpose for living. This book is different only in that He directs you to God’s Word in your experience of the Coronavirus and helps us to consider God’s redemptive purposes in the midst of the specific life-defining moment. Far from being a “seen that, read that” book, this is a book you need to read. The best news? It’s free.

While we’re to stay at home during this Coronavirus crisis, we’re forced to ask some essential questions about the local church: “what is the essence of our meetings?”. “What’s non-negotiable in our corporate worship?”. “What makes a church a church if it doesn’t meet in person?”. Take this opportunity to read this book and grow your understanding of what makes a healthy local church. This is one way that you can use your quarantine well.

If you’re currently experiencing the pain of adversity, pick this up and immerse yourself in the truth of God’s Word.
