The Ordinary Means of Revival

THE SPIRIT WORKING THROUGH THE WORD

One of the chief marks of all true historical revivals - which preceded the sweet harvests of joy which followed - was a refreshed gravity regarding the holiness of God, a seriousness about spiritual things, and a soul-searching crucible in which the Church urgently cast herself upon grace. The instrument which does this heart-piercing, soul-splitting work, is none other than the word of God. And that's exactly what we see in Nehemiah 8. God at work through his word to meet the weak, weary, and self-reliant hearts of his people with conviction. Reforming and restoring them within. Refreshing them with the joy of their salvation. Preparing them to pour that joy out to those beyond.

Small Groups This Week

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AT 7PM

This week, 4 groups will meet throughout our city to share in the joy of Jesus and apply his gospel to each other’s lives. Outside of Sunday mornings, small groups are the most important moments in the life of our church. Make it a priority to attend one as we continue the Proclaim Course - a 4-part series of discussions designed to encourage and equip believers to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. This time around, we’ll be learning why evangelism is easier than we think.

The Bridge Course Starts On Monday

A CLASS BY OUR CHURCH FOR OUR NEIGHBORS

Each fall we host The Bridge Course. A 10-week opportunity to explore the Christian faith, wrestle with the big questions of life, and build relationships with our neighbors. Each week begins with a meal followed by a talk that addresses common questions about life and God. Afterward there is a small-group conversation where participants can share what they believe, ask any questions they have, or just sit back and listen. No one will be called upon, pressured to talk, or forced to believe anything. Click here to learn more about how it works.

Why Bridge?

Because the course creates a context for us to bless and befriend our neighbors, show them the joy we have in Jesus, and invite them to receive it for themselves. How great is that! Our goal is that each of us would invite at least one neighbor, family member, co-worker, or friend who is not yet a Christian, not sure what they believe, or is new to the faith and looking to learn more to join in. Who will you bring to Bridge? Start thinking and praying of who this will be and send them the registration link below.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Who is it for?

  • Anyone seeking answers

  • Anyone who isn’t sure what they believe

  • Anyone who is spiritual but not religious

  • Anyone with doubts about Christianity or wanting to investigate the Christian Faith

  • New Christians or newcomers to the church

  • Anyone who wants to “brush up” on the basics

When and where does it take place?

  • Dates: Mondays from September 8, 2025 - November 10, 2025

  • Time: 7pm-9pm

  • Location: Hopper & Burr, 202 W 4th St, Santa Ana, CA 92701

How can I participate?

  • Take the class yourself, have your questions answered, and be strengthened in your faith

  • Invite someone to Bridge (and attend the course with them!)

  • Volunteer to serve with the class

Our Annual Festival of Nations is Coming Soon

A CELEBRATION OF OUR UNITY IN CHRIST IN THE MIDST OF OUR DIVERSITY

On Sunday, September 14th, we’ll be hosting our annual “Festival of Nations” celebration. Coinciding with Fiestas Patrias and Dia De La Independencia, we want to celebrate what God has built in our church through the gospel - the gathering of people from all different tribes, nations, and tongues into one new family in Christ.

HOW CAN YOU PREPARE?

  1. Bring a dish (entree, dessert or side) representing your culture, upbringing, or national heritage. Bring your best effort. The results will be judged and the “Best In The World” award will be given to the individual whose dish impressed the most. Multiple dishes per family are ok! Kids are welcome to join in the competition as well!

  2. Join us at 4pm on Sunday, September 14th in the Schlieder backyard.

To See Revival, We Must Pray

ASKING GOD TO DO THE WORK ONLY HE CAN DO

“I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer” - Martin Luther

On Sunday, Zechariah 4:1-7 reminded us that in order to see revival we must depend on the Spirit. One of the primary ways we demonstrate our dependence upon the Spirit is through prayer. As we think about all the work there is to do - in our church, in our households, at our jobs, and in every arena of our lives - here's the challenge: Before you do, pray.

Believe that it’s not by might, nor by power, but only by God’s Spirit that you can do anything at all. Then seek God’s help through prayer. Here are 3 ways to pray for the work that only God can do.

1) Praying Daily for revival in your own soul. Casting your cares, your plans, and your very self before the Lord before you carry on with your day. Re-orienting your wandering heart to grace. Re-centering your life upon the solid rock of Christ. Getting back to the foundation of who you are, what is true, and what you need most. Praying the words of Psalm 85:6-7 “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.”

  • Praying the Lord’s Prayer as the cry of your heart. Making Matthew 6:9-13 your own like this: God, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth and in my very own life, as it is in heaven. Give me, by your gracious hand, my daily bread and provide for the needs you know I have - even before I ask. Forgive me for my sins in my actions, affections, and attitudes which dishonor you, selfishly elevate me, and do not build up your Church. Forgive me for my sins, and Lord, give me the grace to forgive others, even as you have forgiven me in Christ. And lead me, Lord, not into temptation but deliver me from the evil one. For I know my weakness, I know where I struggle, I know what I’m prone to, but cause me to stand in the victory of Christ, to take up the shield of faith, and to be strengthened to say every hard “no” to sin that leads to a much better “yes” to Christ.”

  • Asking the Lord to fill you freshly with his Spirit. The practice, which theologian John Owen says, “Is the daily work of believers.” That, “They look upon, and by faith consider, the Holy Spirit as the one promised and as the one sent. In this promise, they know, lies all their grace, peace, mercy, joy, and hope. For by him, as the one promised, and by him alone are these things communicated to believers. If, therefore, our living to the glory of God or the joy of such a life is important to us, then we are to ask for him from the Father as children ask their parents for their daily bread.” Don’t go hungry into your day. Seek the strength and power God provides.

2) Praying Weekly with the pastoral team. The pastoral team is setting aside time every Wednesday morning at 9:15am to pray for revival. We invite you to join us then, or set aside any time during your week, to seek the Lord’s reviving work.

Asking God:

  • To grant us a greater seriousness toward spiritual things and impress upon us that we are his people, called to be holy, a true household of the living God, representatives of Christ to a watching world.

  • To continue reforming and reshaping us according to his word.

  • To continue knitting us more and more tightly together in unity and love.

  • To draw us even more deeply into the joy of Jesus.

  • To cause that joy to overflow and outlet itself into particular aspects of life in our city. Moving toward the needs of our neighbors that have come seeking help. The griefs the city bears. The relationships we have with other pastors, churches, and organizations. The ways in which we can be a blessing to our city leaders and elected officials. And all the missional initiatives that are on the radar for Cross of Grace.

Each week, we’re asking God to work in us for the good of our church and work through us for the good of our city. Set aside the time and come together in spirit in the midst of your day. But also, make it a point to come together face to face for our newly launched prayer meeting.

3) Praying Monthly with the church. On the first Saturday of the month, members of Cross of Grace are gathering together, pursuing the ordinary means of grace, and expecting God to move in extraordinary ways. During these sweet, unhurried moments, we’re taking the needs of the church before the Lord and experiencing powerful times of ministry toward one another. We’re asking God to pour out his blessings and saving grace upon our neighbors. We’re seeking after revival. And more than anything else, we’re desiring that God would glorify himself in greater and greater ways in our city. Praying, “Lord, your Kingdom come, your will be done, in Santa Ana, as it is in heaven.” Longing for God to work in and through us in a way that the fruit, the joy, and the results could only come from him.

We want a work that only God can do. Join us in asking him to do just that.

Baptism Sunday - August ‘25

CELEBRATING NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

This Sunday, we had the joy of watching a household be added to the household of God! We celebrated the baptisms of Felicita, Genesis, and Elijah Rivera - mother, daughter, and son! We witnessed them profess their faith in Jesus’ sacrificial death and victorious resurrection. We looked on as they demonstrated their own sharing in Christ’s dying and rising - being buried with him in baptism and rising up from water again. We rejoiced as God confirmed in their hearts and before our eyes that they’d truly passed from death to life.

We thank God for new life in Christ! A life set free from sin, lived for the glory of the Savior, together with his people. A life that begins now and carries on forever.

Check out the pictures and be encouraged that our neighbors are being saved, our family is growing, and Christ is advancing his mission in our city!

New Revival Sermon Series

REVIVE OUR HEARTS. REVIVE OUR CHURCH. REVIVE OUR CITY.

On Sunday, we kicked off a study on the subject of revival. Between now and the end of September, we’re journeying through select passages in the Old and New Testaments in order to explore what revival is, how it comes, and why we should expect it in our church and city today.

WHAT WE’RE AFTER

All sorts of things probably come to mind when you hear the word “revival.” Do you think of Billy Graham preaching to thousands? Big tent meetings and traveling crusades? Good old-fashioned religion? Altar calls, walking aisles, and raising hands? Excited and ecstatic people? Singing, dancing, speaking in tongues, and getting caught up and carried away in some kind of powerful emotional experience?

Is revival “Something that used to happen?” “Something to be avoided or wary of happening?” Or frankly, “Something that is not much at all?” A term Christians all too frequently throw around with little substance to it. And seemingly always talk about with little to show for it?

But what is revival, really? What are we after here? We believe that revival is when the Spirit of God is poured out upon the ordinary means of grace given to the Church to produce extraordinary fervor for Christ. When this happens, what takes place is a Spirit-wrought reformation - within the church - that leads to renewal - beyond the church. As God enflames the hearts of his people with a heat that brings true conviction over sin, greater appreciation of grace, intensified desires to live godly lives, and joy that is so contagious it can't stay within the walls of the church. We see these moves of the Spirit all throughout the pages of Scripture and the many chapters of Church History. We believe we can and should ask God to work in such a way today.

HOW WE’LL GET THERE

Over the next few weeks, we’ll follow the road-map provided in our definition above to increase our desire for revival. Looking to God’s word to stoke our longing for God’s extraordinary work. Here’s the list of stops we’ll make along the way:

  • Zechariah 4:1-7 - Revival comes by the Spirit

  • Nehemiah 8:1-18 - Through the word which reforms the church and restores God’s people

  • Acts 19:8-27 - To renew the city in which they’ve been placed

Meditate upon these passages. Check out additional resources here and here. Pray that would glorify himself by doing a work among us that could only come from him.

“I do not desire, I do not advise a bustling, artificial effort to get up a revival, nor the construction of any man-devised machinery…I want God’s work, not man’s” (John Angell James).

What is Revival?

A WORK ONLY GOD CAN DO

Revival is an amazing work of God. But all too often, we settle for what man can do. In our own lives - whether it’s in the work we’re doing to build up the church and advance her mission, or in our fight against sin, our attempts to change, our strivings to find joy, experience peace, relieve our anxieties, and on and on - we’re content with something we can do. Our first reflex is to do more, work harder, and rely on ourselves. But the work of refreshing our hearts, reviving our church, and renewing our city is a work that only God can do. So, we need the power that only God possesses. More than anything else, we must depend upon the Holy Spirit.
