A Prayer for Election Day
“Sovereign Lord, you are the God who “reigns over the nations” (Ps 47:8).
We, your people, rejoice that, whatever happens today, this remains true.
You sit on your holy throne (Ps 47:8). Already you have transferred us out of the domain of darkness into the Kingdom of your Beloved Son (Col 1:13). You raised us up with him and seated us in heavenly places (Eph 2:6). You have made us citizens of heaven - subjects of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken - from which we await a Savior who will certainly come for us (Phil 3:20; Heb 12:28).
We rest in this. Our hope is sure and fixed on eternal things (2 Cor 4:18). An Everlasting God and his everlasting Kingdom.
Yet, you teach us to pray for that Kingdom to come. You command that we ask for the ways, the values, and the goals of this Kingdom to be established in the world. You invite us to request that it would gain ground until that Great Day when it comes completely.
So we pray, “Lord, let your Kingdom come and your will be done, in our city, county, state, and nation just as it is in heaven” (Mt 6:10).
Would you work through the democratic process to maximize what you call righteous and minimize unrighteousness. Would you cause the candidates, policies, and propositions that would lead to our neighbor’s flourishing to advance. Would you appoint leaders, above all, who honor you as Savior and Lord. Would make use of this election cycle to reshape, reform, and return the governing authorities back to what you them to be (Rom 13:1-4).
In all this, would you be pleased to use the prayers, the votes, and the participation of your people to make our places, our land, our city just a little more heavenly.
But most of all, would you open wide the door for the gospel and advance the goodness of your reign directly into our neighbor’s hearts. No matter the outcome of any election today, would you grant us faith, endurance, and courage to stay the course of mission - for the eternal good of Santa Anans and the everlasting glory of the Savior.
In whose name we pray. Amen.”
